Art, brunch and coffee delights at Other cafe and gallery in Dalston

Tucked away on Balls Pond Road, lies Other cafe and gallery. Just a stone’s throw from Dalston overground station, it has fast become a Sunday morning favourite of mine.

The furniture is mismatched and sets the tone for a relaxed, lazy atmosphere you should expect from both the customers and staff. Space is limited but sitting amid the chit-chat of other customers, absorbed in the Sunday newspapers, I couldn’t think of a more perfect spot for brunch.

The menu is small but delicious, consisting of traditional English brunches and a selection of fresh soups and salads. The coffee is fresh but the homemade cakes are probably the reason my boyfriend and I keep returning.

There are many similar little cafes popping up across North London but just your average coffee shop it is not. A trip to the toilet downstairs led to the discovery of another eating area laid out like your great aunt’s old-fashioned living room, complete with an open fire. Next to that we found a more spacious room displaying the work of local artists.

The taller visitors might have to duck and it’s really a meeting spot for two rather than a group but that’s the only critique. You can’t book, so stay away from the sofa at the back, that’s my favourite spot!
